SUNRISE, FL (LGS) — The Buffalo Sabres recalled defenseman Mike Weber from the Portland Pirates as an insurnace policy in the event that both Toni Lydman and Craig Rivet are unable to suit up tonight.
To make room for Weber on the 23-man active roster, the Sabres placed forward Patrick Kaleta on injured reserve with head and neck injuries. Kaleta was injured Saturday night in Montreal when he was drilled into the boards awkwardly by Andrei Kostitsyn.
Kaleta joins Tim Connolly on Buffalo's IR list. Connolly has missed the last eight games with a broken rib.
Rivet also suffered an upper-body injury during the Sabres 3-2 loss against the Canadiens. There was some hope that he was going to be able to play tonight against the Florida Panthers but it appears he will miss at least one more game.
Lydman suffered a leg injury via a shot block during Monday night's game against Nashville. He tried to skate on his own Wednesday morning but had a hard time doing so. Lydman's status was upgraded today as the blueliner was able to participate in the morning gameday skate. If he can't go, Weber will get his third start of the season.
Derek Roy and Andrew Peters, who also missed practice time this week, are expect to be healthy enough to play.
